Let's Make Some Mischief Pie: DIY Mixed Media Recipes for the 2nd Half of Life

Welcome back to **Recipes for the Second Half of Life**, a creative mixed media series for women 50 and beyond who want to use art and writing as tools for self-discovery, meaning, and creative renewal.
In this episode, we’re creating **Mischief Pie**, a recipe card inspired by the Creative Alchemy element of **Deep Play**.
The question at the heart of this card is:
**What would I make if no one were judging?**
After exploring rest, reflection, and deep knowing, this recipe brings some much-needed levity, color, playfulness, and creative freedom back into the box.
Deep Play is not frivolous. It is not childish. It is not a waste of time. Deep Play helps us loosen the grip of perfectionism and remember that creativity is allowed to be curious, messy, surprising, and fun.
For so many of us in the second half of life, we’ve spent decades being responsible, practical, useful, and efficient. But sometimes practicality crowds out aliveness. This card is an invitation to take yourself a little less seriously, follow the odd image, choose the bright color, make the crooked mark, and create something simply because it delights you.
**Recipe: Mischief Pie**
**Best for:**
When I feel too serious, perfectionistic, stuck, over-responsible, or disconnected from delight.
**Ingredients:**
One small card.
Bright scraps.
An odd or surprising image.
A color that makes me smile.
One playful mark.
A dash of nonsense.
Permission to be imperfect.
**Method:**
Choose something fun before it makes sense.
Layer color, pattern, and surprise.
Add something crooked, silly, strange, or unexpected.
Try one tiny experiment.
Let the card be playful, not polished.
**Reflection:**
What would I make if no one were judging?
Optional closing line:
**No one is grading my joy.**
You might also ask yourself:
Where am I taking myself too seriously?
What did I love before I learned to be practical?
What kind of play am I craving now?
What small creative experiment would bring me back to life?
This series is inspired by my 8 Keys of Creative Alchemy and the ways art, writing, and reflection help us reconnect with who we are becoming in the second half of life.
I’d love to hear from you in the comments:
