$9 Trillion of US Debt is Due in 2026 — What Happens Next?

Last week the US Treasury sold euros to prop up the Japanese yen — the first intervention of its kind since the Asian financial crisis, and the ECB only found out afterwards. Why would America do something that strange? Because $9 trillion of US government debt matures in 2026, roughly a quarter of the national debt.

But the rollover isn't the real problem. The people holding that debt are largely captive buyers who have to reinvest. The real problem is what servicing the debt now costs — interest payments have overtaken defence spending and are heading for $2.1 trillion a year — and what happens to the public finances if the economy stops growing.

In this video: why the pandemic left America with short-dated debt, why Japan and China matter, what the CBO projections actually show, and why a recession would be far more damaging to the budget than the maturity wall.
