AI Researchers Are Quitting Over This. Here's What They're Not Saying.
I don't have any special access to what's actually happening inside the OpenAI and Anthropic companies beyond what's public, and I'm not going to either dismiss the researchers' concerns or hype them up on these companies' behalf. In this video and piece of article I wrote, I discuss whether the extinction estimates are credible, what the proposed legislation would actually do.
Current AI models genuinely have shown "misaligned" behaviors in narrow test settings the incidents mentioned in that article (agents hacking, going outside intended scope) are real, and both Anthropic and OpenAI have documented them.
The worry isn't that today's models are dangerous. It's the trajectory: if labs succeed at making AI that can meaningfully improve itself, nobody has a good plan for keeping that under control, and several serious researchers (not just PR-seeking outsiders) think that could happen within years, not decades.
You don't need malice for this to go wrong a system pursuing a goal that's subtly different from what humans want, at high capability, is the actual scenario.
