The ongoing war in Ukraine is reshaping Europe’s defense landscape, with Sweden emerging as a major hub for military production. In the northern town of Ornskoldsvik, BAE Systems’ Hägglunds division is experiencing unprecedented growth as demand for armoured vehicles surges. Once a struggling business after post-Cold War demilitarisation, the company has seen output increase by 400% since 2020, with workforce numbers more than tripling. Sweden’s arms exports have also skyrocketed, reflecting the rising need for advanced military equipment across Europe.

At the center of this boom is the Combat Vehicle 90 (CV90), a fifth-generation infantry fighting vehicle that has gained global attention after being deployed in Ukraine. With over 1,300 units sold and hundreds more on order, the CV90 has become one of Sweden’s most successful defense exports. The war has accelerated investments, expanded production capacity, and reinforced Europe’s focus on military readiness. As geopolitical tensions continue, the defense industry’s rapid growth raises important questions about security, strategy, and the future of warfare.
