North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has announced plans to equip the country's navy with nuclear weapons and build larger warships as part of an ongoing military expansion. Speaking at the commissioning ceremony of the 5,000-tonne destroyer Choe Hyon in the port city of Nampho, Kim said the navy's nuclear armament programme was progressing as planned. The move comes despite extensive international sanctions imposed over Pyongyang's nuclear programme, which North Korea says is essential for deterring the United States and South Korea.
